Sydney tallied up its wettest winter in nearly 20 years despite one month being drier than average, figures show.

Weatherzone reported that August's "torrential" rain haul saw the city register its most rain-filled winter in 18 years.

But June, with a rain total of 18.6mm, was well below its long-term average of 132.5mm.

July kicked things off properly with 159mm, compared to its average of 97.7mm.

And August was wet almost end to end, with Sydney copping 389.6mm, compared to the average of 79.9mm.

August's rainfall total on its own was larger than the city's long-term winter average of 310.1mm, but altogether, Sydney copped 567.2mm across the three months, closing in on nearly double that average.
