SAINT PAUL, Minn. — Nine mayors from some of Minnesota's largest cities stood together inside the Capitol on Tuesday asking state legislators to either ban assault weapons statewide, or repeal a 1985 law that prevents cities from regulating firearms at the local level.
The chief executives in attendance included Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis, Mayor Melvin Carter of Saint Paul, Mayor Tim Busse of Bloomington, and six others from Stillwater, Vadnais Heights, Minnetonka, Hopkins, Richfield and Columbia Heights. Following last week's deadly shooting at Annunciation Church , the mayors issued a unified call to the legislature as Gov. Walz prepares to call a special session later this month.
