The Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians donated three original acrylic paintings to the Buellton Library on Friday, adding to the décor of the new facility that opened six months ago.

“Art is a way for our tribe to celebrate our culture and heritage,” said Nakia Zavalla, cultural director for the tribe.

The centerpiece, Children of our Rainbow, was created this summer by tribal youth with artist Bobby Duran, featuring ancestor Maria Solares surrounded by a rainbow of flowers. Duran also contributed Sacred Vessels, inspired by Chumash basketry, and Salmon and Coyote, based on a traditional story.

“I’m grateful and thankful to be part of this project with the Buellton Library because it’s a great place to share our culture and art,” Duran said.
