CHARLESTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Repairs are currently underway to replace a short-span bridge on Rutledge Road in Kanawha County.

The West Virginia Division of Highways closed the bridge nearly a month ago, after a routine bridge inspection revealed deterioration in the steel beams supporting the 18-foot span.

“Well, we hate shutting anyone down, and we wanna keep people going where they wanna go,” Acting District One Maintenance Manager Steven Holmes said. “I hate being delayed and I hate to reroute, but its a part of life. We gotta keep the public safe.”

Bridge engineers say they were able to expedite an emergency replacement project for the bridge, and an agreement with the power company to move a utility line to allow access to the site sped up the process.
