OMAHA, Neb. (WOWT) - At 100 mph — that’s how fast the Nebraska State Patrol says more than 50 drivers were caught going in a 10-day span across Nebraska.

And the danger shows in the numbers.

The Douglas County Sheriff’s office says there was a 34% spike in traffic deaths last year.

“We’re the speeders, we’re the stop sign runners, we’re the people who don’t put our cell phones down, sometimes we don’t buckle up,” Keep Kids Alive, Drive 25 founder Tom Everson said.

This past spring, a Millard West student died in a traffic accident at a busy intersection.

At the time, Omaha Police said “speed was a factor in that collision as well as violation of a traffic signal.”
