ATLANTA, Ga. (Atlanta News First) - Viral warnings online have sparked confusion and concern at gas pumps in metro Atlanta. According to both state regulators and QuikTrip officials, the panic may be misplaced.
Several videos circulating on social media claim that stickers covering tap-to-pay logos at gas stations across the country could be part of a scam designed to steal credit card data. Drivers said the posts led them to take extra precautions, like paying inside the gas station at the register and avoiding paying at the pump altogether.
“Instagram… a guy said he got scammed off those before,” said Cameron Newmaan, who spotted one of the stickers in a warning post on social media.
Michael Phillips said he removed a sticker from one local pump after seeing similar warnings online.
