(WENY) -- As students across New York return to classrooms this week, a new state law means they’ll be spending their school days without smartphones in hand.

Governor Kathy Hochul is reminding parents to review the state’s “Bell-To-Bell” policy, which requires K-12 public schools, charter schools, and BOCES to restrict smartphone use for the entire school day. That includes lunch, study halls, and other periods outside of class.

The policy is aimed at cutting down distractions and boosting learning. Hochul’s office has also set aside $13.5 million for schools that need help purchasing storage solutions to secure devices during the day.
