BRAINERD — When Matt Dircks’ son started wrestling in the Brainerd lakes area, the closest wrestling gym available to them was in the Cities.

And thus, Scoring Edge Wrestling Center came into existence in 2015.

Now in its 10th year of business, Matt Dircks, coach and owner of Scoring Edge Wrestling Center, said he was just filling what he saw as a need in an area where the sport of wrestling was growing.

"If you've never been around wrestling or know much about it, it's a grueling one-on-one sport,” Matt Dircks said. “You've got to mentally overcome getting beaten, come back and do it again and again. I feel it prepares you for life. You get beat, you don't give up, you keep going.”

Growing up in Brainerd, Matt Dircks wrestled in high school and had a few scholarships to attend college
