Labour is said to be considering a fresh round of DWP benefit cuts in the Chancellor's Autumn Budget. Finance experts have warned that tax rises alone will not be enough to plug Britain's black hole, and spending on welfare must be trimmed.

Major changes to Universal Credit and Personal Independence Payment had to be watered down earlier this year, leaving the Government with a tough task ahead to reform the system and get more people off benefits and back into work. A £5 billion package that would have seen 800,000 people lose PIP had to be abandoned after an outcry from backbenchers and disability activists.
