SALT LAKE CITY — Riverton has become the first city in Utah to create a formal agreement with ICE, allowing some of its police officers to enforce immigration law.
In a joint statement , Riverton Mayor Trent Staggs and Police Chief Shane Taylor say this agreement could act as a “force multiplier” by allowing them to certify certain officers to investigate and detain illegal immigrants. They say this will keep neighborhoods safe and protect law-abiding citizens.
On the flip side, KSL has reported on similar agreements in Utah counties , and many residents have said that they are worried public safety could be at risk if victims who are here illegally are afraid to call police.
Under this agreement, Riverton City will give certain officers special training to have authority similar to tha
