A yellow weather warning has been issued as torrential downpours and blustery conditions are predicted which could trigger flooding and travel chaos, the Met Office announced.

The rain alert remains active from midnight through to 2pm on Wednesday across parts of the Midlands, south-west England and large swathes of South Wales.

Weather chiefs expanded the zone under warning during the early hours of Tuesday to encompass areas of south-east England.
