AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Eastbound Interstate 20 is shut down near the Aiken airport after a tanker truck overturned in an area that’s become a trouble spot for accidents like this.

The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday when the tanker, reportedly carrying about 2,400 gallons of used motor oil, flipped.

One person was initially trapped but freed themselves, according to crews on the scene.

The motor oil was leaking out of the tanker, with at least 100 gallons spilling by 12:35 p.m., according to crews on the scene.

A hazardous materials crew was requested.

Crews at the scene expect a lengthy closure, and a detour was being worked out.

Traffic was severely backed up after the accident, which happened in the same area where other tankers have overturned.
