BATON ROUGE, La. (WAFB) - A man is now behind bars in connection with a shooting that left a pregnant mother and her unborn child dead.

Officers responded around 8:42 a.m. on July 27 to the 5100 block of Highland Road, near Lee Drive, where they found two people with gunshot wounds.

The woman, identified by police as Kimberly Martin, 29, was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound to the chest and later died from her injuries. Authorities say Martin was pregnant and the unborn child did not survive.

A male victim was also shot in the leg and is expected to survive.
