A 12-year-old boy from Toronto has been charged with attempted murder following a shooting incident in Markham last month. York Regional Police reported that officers responded to a shooting near McCowan Road and 14th Avenue on August 14, around 5:20 p.m. Upon arrival, they found a man suffering from gunshot wounds. The victim was transported to a hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.
The young suspect was taken into custody on Tuesday. He faces multiple charges, including attempted murder, discharging a firearm with intent, possession of property obtained by crime, and possession of a firearm without authorization. Additionally, he has been charged with two counts of failing to comply with a release order.
At the time of the shooting, the boy was already out on bail for unrelated violent offenses. This situation has raised concerns among law enforcement officials. York Regional Police Chief Jim MacSween commented on the issue, stating, "Once again, we’re seeing individuals released on bail involved in serious crimes within our community."
MacSween emphasized the need for legislative changes to keep violent and repeat offenders off the streets. He also highlighted the importance of focusing on youth rehabilitation to ensure public safety and maintain community trust in law enforcement.
The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with information to contact police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 7541, or to reach out to Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-TIPS (8477).
