An Oklahoma grandmother is the latest family member to be charged with neglect in the case of her 11-year-old granddaughter. Prosecutors say she knew the girl had given birth to her stepfather's baby and she failed to go to authorities with the information.

The 53-year-old woman has been charged with six felony counts of child neglect. She was still in custody on Wednesday, Sept. 3, and her bond was set at $75,000, the Muskogee County District Attorney’s Office confirmed to USA TODAY.

Also in custody are the child’s 34-year-old stepfather and 33-year-old mother. Both are being held without bond, according to the Muskogee County District Attorney’s Office.

The child’s stepfather was previously charged with one felony count of child sexual abuse and six counts of felony child neglect. Authorities say the stepfather sexually abused the girl, leading to her pregnancy, according to court documents.

The child’s mother was charged with one felony count of enabling child sexual abuse and six counts of felony child neglect. The district attorney added the child neglect charges after authorities found the 11-year-old and five other children, ranging from ages 2 to 9, living in “deplorable conditions,” according to court documents.

The mother and stepfather previously requested court-appointed lawyers, according to the Muskogee County District Attorney’s Office. The couple has preliminary hearings scheduled for Nov. 24, 2025, before Judge Robin Adair, the office said.

USA TODAY is not publishing the names of the stepfather, grandmother or mother to protect the identities of the children involved.

Grandmother knew about sexual abuse, documents allege

The family lives in Muskogee County, about 58 miles southeast of Tulsa, where the stepfather allegedly sexually abused the girl between Jan. 1, 2025, and August 2025, according to court documents.

The girl gave birth in the family’s home on the afternoon of Aug. 16. She had received no medical care for more than a year, the documents say.

Three days later, on Aug. 19, police and the Muskogee County Department of Human Services (DHS) removed six children from the home. The girl's mother and stepfather stated they had no knowledge she was pregnant, according to court records.

The DA added neglect charges after investigators found six children in the home “living in dog feces,” court documents show.

The child’s grandmother lives across the street from the family and regularly spoke to the child who gave birth, the documents say. The grandmother also took care of the other five children in the home, the documents say.

Speaking to a local television station, KJRH, the child's grandmother said the 11-year-old was "curious" and she believed her baby’s father was a 12-year-old her grandmother used to babysit. But officials contend the baby is the result of sexual abuse and the stepfather is the child's biological father. Officials also say multiple adults in the family knew the girl was pregnant before she went into labor.
