JENISON, Mich. — A Jenison mom says her daughter who has a tracheostomy is missing out on preschool because there’s no nurse available to go with her. Now, she’s turning to the community for help.

Four-year-old Kymber Shepherd was ready for her first day of preschool this week.

“She's your average kid. She runs around, she plays, she sings, she loves life, she loves to live,” said Kymber's mother, Breanna Byxbe.

However, instead of heading into the classroom, she stayed home.

“I had twins at 23 weeks and she is the surviving twin. Her sister passed after about 24 hours,” said Byxbe.

“Kimber ended up spending 308 days in the NICU and at six months old, is when she got her trach,” said Byxbe.

Byxbe said Kymber relies on a trach and ventilator and needs specialized care at school.
