LEXINGTON, Ky. (WKYT) - Blood pressure checks are getting more attention in the medical field.

Recently, the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association put out new high blood pressure guidelines that focus on prevention and early treatment to reduce cardiovascular risk. New research has also shown that high blood pressure can have a direct impact on cognitive decline and dementia.

WKYT Photojournalist Darnell Crenshaw spoke to a woman who suffered from high blood pressure that led to a stroke, putting her in the hospital for a week and rehab for almost a month.

Yavon Griffin has dealt with high blood pressure, and in 2021, it led to a stroke.

“It wasn’t the classic symptoms. I just felt like it was a bit underwater,” said Griffin.
