AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - Eastbound Interstate 20 was shut down for most of Wednesday near the Aiken airport after a tanker overturned in an area that’s become a trouble spot for accidents like this.
The highway had reopened by 6:09 p.m. after the tanker was pulled upright by a wrecker and state environmental officials had left the scene.
The accident happened around 12:30 p.m. Wednesday near Mile Marker 22 when the tanker flipped while carrying about 2,400 gallons of used motor oil.
One person was initially trapped but got free, according to crews on the scene.
One witness, a truck driver, told News 12 a red pickup in the right lane came in contact with the tanker.
