H.J. Heinz started his food business venture when he was just a kid. He took the canned goods that his mother made and rolled them in a wheelbarrow into Downtown Pittsburgh to sell.
By 1869, he had launched a business that grew into a world renowned brand. Eventually Heinz products were sold on every continent except for Antarctica, according to Sen. John Heinz History Center President and CEO Andrew Masich.
Though Heinz doesn’t package food here anymore, Pittsburghers still love to remind foreigners about the company’s roots. \
“It’s always nice to go to a diner in another country and you see a bottle of Heinz there,” said lifelong Pittsburgher Lindsey Brown, who was shopping in the Strip District on Wednesday. “It’s like a little touch of home wherever you are.”
