BLUFFTON, SC (WSAV) — A Bluffton woman has entered the race for South Carolina's 1st Congressional District, and she's hoping to be the first Latina to represent the Lowcountry.

Mayra Rivera-Vazquez grew up in Puerto Rico and said when she sees President Donald Trump and the Republican vision, she does not see her American dream.

While she has never held political office, the former head of the Beaufort County Democratic party says now is the time to run for congress because change is possible in South Carolina's 1st district.

Rivera-Vazquez says she's aiming to connect with communities in the district that don't often see themselves in politics and said she plans to campaign in both English and Spanish.
