JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Parents and students are preparing for big changes next year as St. Johns County opens two new K-8 schools, one in the Nocatee area and another in Silver Leaf.

Pine Island Academy will be hit the hardest, with hundreds of students expected to move to the new Nocatee school as part of a district-wide effort to relieve overcrowding. Superintendent Brennan Asplen said these changes are challenging but necessary.

“We're growing so fast and overcrowded so fast so we have to continue building schools and move people," Asplen said.

Parents like Leah Post, who recently moved to the county with her two daughters, say they understand the need for rezoning.
