LAKE CHARLES, La. (KPLC) - September is Hunger Awareness Month, and the Mayor of Lake Charles has marked the month with a special proclamation. However, the message goes beyond words at Second Harvest Food Bank.
“I, Marshall J. Simien Jr., Mayor of the City of Lake Charles in the sovereign state of Louisiana, do hereby proclaim the month of September as Hunger Action Month,” Simien said at the proclamation event.
Food insecurity is associated with numerous negative social and health outcomes. One in every five children in America faces uncertainty about where their next meal will come from.
Federal changes slashed funding from $5 million to just $1 million for organizations like Second Harvest, leaving them scrambling to fill the gap and with empty shelves.
