(ABC22/FOX44) - After a rare endorsement in the race for New York's next mayor, Bernie Sanders is headed to the big apple this weekend.

Vermont's senior senator announced today he is teaming up with the man he wants to unseat Eric Adams. The AP has reported members of the president's staff approached current Mayor Adams. Asking if he would consider dropping out of the race to take a federal position.

Sources say a similar offer was made to republican nominee Curtis Sliwa.

This would be to consolidate opposition against democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani, creating a one-on-one matchup between him and former governor Andrew Cuomo.

In June, Mister Mamdani won the primary with 56-percent of the vote. Days later, Cuomo announced he would stay in the race as an independent.
