GATESVILLE, Texas — More than 65 animals found living in poor conditions at a Gatesville home are now in the care of local shelters after authorities intervened in a case of alleged animal cruelty.

The Coryell County Sheriff’s Office said deputies discovered dozens of dogs, ponies and other livestock outside a home earlier this month. Property owners Heather and Adam Bauer told deputies they had been running a rescue sanctuary on the property for more than 20 years.

Both were arrested on charges of cruelty to livestock and non-livestock animals but were released on bond Aug. 27.

According to an arrest affidavit, several horses were seized and taken to the Coryell County pens while the dogs were impounded on-site.
