About half of women who experience extreme morning sickness consider terminating pregnancies, according to new research.

The Flinders University study revealed the severe mental and physical toll hyperemesis gravidarum (HG) – extreme pregnancy nausea and vomiting – on Australian women.

A survey of almost 300 found that more than half had considered terminating a pregnancy due to HG symptoms.

More than 60 per cent reported they often or always felt anxious or depressed during pregnancy and 90 per cent considered never having another child.

Hyperemesis Australia founder and co-author on the study Caitlin Kay-Smith said the research proves HG can no longer be "dismissed as a normal part of pregnancy".

"They are experiencing a condition that can be life-altering," she said.
