A swarm of jellyfish has shut down a reactor at one of France's biggest nuclear power stations after swimming inside a series of filters in the water pumping station.
Electricity production at the Paluel nuclear plant in northern France was almost halved on Wednesday after the number 4 reactor was shut down and power at the number 3 reactor was reduced to protect infrastructure at the plant, according to a statement from provider EDF.
Newsweek contacted EDF for more information on the situation via email.
Why It Matters
This isn't the first time that jellyfish have caused the shutdown of a nuclear reactor. Many of France's power stations draw seawater directly from the ocean as coolant for their inner workings.
