A $2 million state transportation grant will soon help the city of Vancouver improve safety on a heavily trafficked section of upper Main Street.

The city studied how to better meet the needs of people traveling along Main Street from Fourth Plain Boulevard to Northeast 63rd Street, said Ryan Lopossa, Vancouver’s transportation manager.

“We went through a whole process to see if there’s something we can do to make the road safer for something other than just (drivers),” Lopossa said. “We evaluated all of upper Main and came up with suggestions.”

In 2026, the city will begin a $3.5 million project on Main Street between 37th Street and the Interstate 5 interchange to resurface the road, create a two-way bicycle lane and reconfigure traffic signals.
