The deadline for when taxis licensed in South Cambridgeshire need to be zero or ultra-low emission could be extended by two years. South Cambridgeshire District Council is considering the change after hearing from drivers in the area about the impact of the cost of living and their ability to afford a new zero or ultra-low emission car.

Currently the authority’s policy states that by no later than December 1, 2028 all hackney carriage and private hire vehicles it licenses must be zero or ultra-low emission. The district council is considering extending this deadline to 2030, subject to a review in 2027.

A report presented to councillors this week said a consultation on the change was held, with 482 taxi drivers saying they supported the extension and only 32 saying they did not support
