SYRACUSE, N.Y. (WSYR-TV) -- The FDA has approved a new COVID-19 vaccine formula targeting Omicron variants, but obtaining the shot may be more challenging than before.

The updated vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna were approved last week, and they aim to provide better protection against the currently circulating Omicron variants. However, access to these vaccines is limited by new guidelines that prioritize individuals over 65 and those with certain preexisting medical conditions.

Dr. Stephen Thomas, director of Upstate Global Health, noted that while COVID cases are on the rise, hospitalizations remain low. He emphasized the importance of the new vaccine targeting Omicron variants.
