OTTAWA — A Canadian citizen is among those injured in a tragic streetcar accident in Lisbon, Portugal, on Wednesday. The incident involved a historic 19th-century streetcar that is a well-known tourist attraction in the city. At least 17 people lost their lives in the crash, and 21 others sustained injuries.
The head of Lisbon’s Civil Protection Agency confirmed that one Canadian was among the injured. Passengers from seven other countries were also affected by the accident. Global Affairs Canada has not yet provided a comment regarding the situation.
In response to the disaster, Portugal held a national day of mourning on Thursday, marking one of the most devastating events in the capital's recent history. The streetcar, which offers scenic rides up and down the city's steep hills, is popular among both locals and tourists for its picturesque views.
Authorities are continuing to investigate the cause of the crash, which has shocked the community and raised concerns about safety on the city's public transport system.
