Berlin — Not long ago, Tesla Inc. was riding high in Germany.

The eco-conscious country, with its long stretches of speed-limitless autobahns, was a natural match for an electric car manufacturer known for absurdly fast acceleration.

Last year through July, Teslas accounted for 11% of new fully electric vehicles registered in Germany, good for second place, behind Volkswagen AG. And Tesla’s Model Y SUV was the top electric model in Germany.

Then Tesla CEO Elon Musk cast his lot with Donald Trump, and the United States launched a trade fight with the European Union, driving Tesla sales off a cliff.
