CLAYTON, N.C. (WTVD) -- One person is dead after a multi-vehicle crash on I-40 in Johnston County.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, troopers responded to a crash involving three vehicles on I-40 East at the 311-mile marker just before 4 p.m.

Troopers said a blue Mini Cooper, a red Ford F-150, and a black Jeep Grand Cherokee were all driving eastbound when the driver of the Mini Cooper slowed down and was rear-ended by the Ford, which was directly behind it.

Authorities said the Ford then swerved off the road to the right shoulder, and the Mini Cooper was immediately hit from behind by the Jeep.

The driver of the Mini Cooper, Cheryl Elaine Boesel, of Hope Mills, was pronounced dead at the scene.
