It turns out the road to a healthier heart might start with a wagging tail and a wet nose.

Nebraska Medicine's Cardiology Department is teaming up with Town and Country Animal Rescue for a heartwarming new awareness campaign, 'Hearts and Hounds'. It highlights the powerful connection between pet ownership and cardiovascular health.

According to the American Heart Association, owning a dog could reduce your risk of dying from a heart attack or stroke by 31%.

"Heart disease is the number one cause of death in the U.S.," said Sarah McHenry, a nurse and clinical coordinator for cardiology at Nebraska Medicine. She sat down with KETV's Waverle Monroe to discuss the science behind the snuggles.
