The Oakland Fire Department started this year’s fire season with some wins in hand. Measure MM, a local special tax on those living in Oakland’s Wildfire Prevention Zone, will soon pour money into vegetation management and three temporarily shuttered fire stations have reopened their doors.

Californians have come to expect severe wildfire seasons year after year, but according to Oakland Fire Chief Damon Covington , this year’s fire season has been manageable so far. While California’s mutual aid system means the department currently has one Oakland fire engine deployed to lend support at the Blue Fire in Siskiyou County, the East Bay has been spared the more intense fires that have been seen throughout the state.
