The Department of Justice is suing Boston and its mayor and police chief in federal court, claiming a city law keeping police from cooperating with federal immigration enforcement violates the Constitution.
Lawyers from the Justice Department are seeking to have the Boston Trust Act declared invalid, for allegedly violating the Supremacy Clause of the Constitution, according to a filing Thursday in U.S. District Court for the District of Massachusetts.

"Cities cannot obstruct the Federal Government from enforcing immigration laws. When that occurs, a city breaks the law. The City of Boston is doing just that," the lawsuit says.
