Two women have died after they were hit by a car in Melbourne .
Emergency services were called to the Hume Freeway in Craigieburn just after 7.30pm yesterday.
It's believed the two women were struck after they stopped to help an injured animal.
A 30-year-old Beveridge woman died at the scene.
A 30-year-old Thomastown woman was airlifted to hospital but died a short time later.
The driver of the car remained at the scene and has assisted police.
The circumstances of the crash are under investigation.
