Two women have died after they were hit by a car on a motorway when they stopped to help an injured animal.
The women were struck on the Hume Freeway in Melbourne just after 7.30pm on September 4.
It is believed the pair had stopped to help an injured kangaroo.
A 30-year-old Beveridge woman died at the scene.
A 30-year-old Thomastown woman was airlifted to hospital but died a short time later, police said
The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene and assisted police with their enquiries.
The exact circumstances of the collision are still being investigated.
The speed limit on the Hume Freeway is 100km/hour.
