GATLINBURG, Tenn. (WATE) — A Canadian man is facing charges after a Gatlinburg resident was reportedly scammed out of more than $200,000 in late August.
Gatlinburg Police said Yin Yiin Cheng, 31, of Burnaby, British Columbia was arrested on August 27 on charges including fraud, theft, and financial exploitation of an elderly or vulnerable adult.
An investigation that resulted in Chen's arrest began just a few days before, on August 25, when the department received a report about possible internet fraud involving an older victim. GPD said the victim was first contacted through Facebook in early July and persuaded to invest in what seemed like a legitimate investment opportunity.
