NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) - It took decades for Galia Meira to find the strength to leave her ex-husband, the man who had trafficked her for their entire marriage.
“Where I was picked up was actually in the county where my ex-husband was a deputy sheriff, so that in itself was terrifying because I never knew where he was going to be,” Meira said.
She met her rescuers, strangers that she had gotten in touch with through a trauma coach, at a local mall. She left her car and her cell phone behind so that her ex couldn’t track her and got into a white van.
“I was just like, I was already on edge, already had a lot of anxiety, and that was a lot for me,” Meira said. “With my experiences, vans like that were... pleasant things didn’t happen when you were in one.”
