The San Francisco 49ers added Christian McCaffrey to their injury report Thursday after the veteran running back was a full participant in Wednesday's practice.
McCaffrey was downgraded to limited because of a calf injury, according to the 49ers' official injury report.
McCaffrey missed the first eight games of the 2024 NFL season while dealing with Achilles tendinitis. The 29-year-old was only able to play in a total of four games after returning and suffering a PCL sprain in his knee during a Week 13 loss to the Buffalo Bills.
Christian McCaffrey injury update
The 49ers have not provided additional clarity on whether McCaffrey's practice downgrade was simply a precaution or if he is dealing with a new injury. His status at Friday's practice could be telling about his availability for the team's Week 1 game against the Seattle Seahawks.
49ers RB depth chart
If McCaffrey is unable to play in Week 1 because of his injury, the 49ers would likely rely on Brian Robinson Jr. and Isaac Guerendo to lead their backfield.
Robinson was acquired from the Washington Commanders in a preseason trade. The 6-1, 228-pound back racked up 799 yards and eight touchdowns for his former team. Meanwhile, Guerendo totaled 420 yards and four touchdowns as a rookie for the 49ers last season.
