Sam Kerr will make her long-awaited return to soccer after a 20-month absence in Chelsea's Women's Super League season-opener — and she will be looking to mark the occasion with a landmark 100th goal for the club.

The news that the English champions' fans — not to mention all Matildas supporters — wanted to hear came when Chelsea boss Sonia Bompastor revealed Kerr was in the squad to play Manchester City on Saturday morning (AEST) at Stamford Bridge.

"Sam Kerr is in the squad. She will be involved in the game. We don't know yet if she will start or not, but she's in the squad," said the Frenchwoman.

"She's in a good place. She's been training well. She's physically in a good position, also mentally."
