FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WPTA) - The prosecution and defense in a trial over the deadly stabbing of a beloved Waynedale Kroger employee in 2023 have rested.

Jermard Lewis, 32, is charged with murder in connection with the death of Perla Nieto on Dec. 7, 2023.

Dozens of community members gathered at the Kroger in the days after Nieto’s death to honor her life and mourn. Today, a plaque hangs in the store in her memory.

BACKGROUND

On the day of the stabbing, Lewis was at the store about 35 minutes before the homicide, court records show. He left after an argument with Nieto and other employees.

Police said Lewis threatened staff before leaving.
