The Emergency Alert system, which had its first nationwide test in April 2023, is used to inform people when there is a danger to life nearby, such as flooding or storms.
Since the first nationwide test in 2023, it has been used in real emergencies five times, including in December 2024 when Storm Darragh brought dangerous winds to the UK.
By testing the system, the government can check that it is working as it should and will be effective in warning people against imminent danger when real emergencies do strike.
