For many of us September, not January, marks the beginning of a new year. Here are some suggestions from a veteran teacher for parents of teenagers.

Most parents make an extra effort to be at their children’s kindergarten plays, however, by the time the students reach high school, very few parents attend the parent-teacher conference nights. Boston Latin Academy starts in grade 7 so I have taught many grades throughout my career. Without exception parents with students in grade 7 attend parent-teacher meetings in such numbers that I often run out of time and space. Whereas in grades 10, 11 and 12, very often I am sitting in my room all alone.
