Katharine, Duchess of Kent has died at 92 years old, Buckingham Palace announced, triggering a period of official royal mourning until her funeral.

Katharine was the oldest living royal before she passed away at Kensington Palace on Thursday night.

"It is with deep sorrow that Buckingham Palace announces the death of Her Royal Highness The Duchess of Kent," Buckingham Palace said in a statement. "Her Royal Highness passed away peacefully last night at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family.
