DENNIS TOWNSHIP — Two people were airlifted to the hospital following an accident Thursday near Route 47 and Petersburg Road.

Firefighters said they were dispatched to the site just before 2 p.m. and found a vehicle had gone off the road through the guardrail, resting just shy of Johnson’s Pond with several occupants still inside.

The firefighters extracted the occupants of the car.

Due to the severity of the victims' injuries, firefighters requested two medical helicopters, which landed in Union Cemetery. Several other patients were transported via ambulance to AtlantiCare and Inspira hospitals.

Route 47 northbound was closed for about an hour while the site was cleared. State Police are investigating.
