At the dawn of a new school year, the Ford government may soon pass legislation that will require all provincial school boards to bring police officers back into schools.
It’s been eight years since Toronto District School Board (TDSB) trustees cancelled their School Resource Officer (SRO) program. Since then, uniformed police officers have no longer been stationed in TDSB schools.
At the time, trustees argued that having police officers in schools made students feel intimidated and unwelcome. However, TDSB’s own analysis of the SRO program showed that most students (57%) had a positive impression of the police officers in their schools.
So, what’s happened since TDSB trustees showed police officers the door?
Last year, a report from Ontario’s auditor general found that TDSB’s rate o
