SAC CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A Sac County man was arrested after he allegedly seriously injured the Sac County Sheriff during an assault.

According to court documents, Matthew Birt, 33, assaulted Sac County Sheriff Jonathan Meyer on August 25, 2025.

The court documents state that Birt showed up at Meyer's home just before 6 p.m. At this time, Meyer had been in his backyard and came to the front of his home after hearing Birt pull into the driveway. Meyer had been with his minor son when Birt showed up.

Meyer walked away from Birt, telling him he "was not going to do this in front of Meyer's minor son." At this time, the court documents state that Birt began to punch Meyer and tackled him to the ground.

Birt continued his assault on Meyer by choking him. Some neighbors heard the incident and
