A new effort aimed at getting rid of blight and revitalizing rundown areas on the South Side of Billings is moving forward.

This city council earlier this week decided to continue exploring the possible expansion of the South Billings Boulevard Urban Renewal District, or SBBURD.

An urban renewal district is a blighted area where there’s a lack of public and private investment and lagging economic growth. These districts use tax increment financing or TIF money to incentivize development by leveraging increases in the tax base that are brought about by neighborhood improvements.

The city now has three TIF districts, including, the East Billings Urban Renewal District or EBURD, downtown’s expanded North 27th Street district and the SBBURD. Download PDF
