And that is just what is happening: four-legged democracy in Somerville. An election is underway, and polls close Friday in a hotly contested race for mayor of the bike path — humans need not apply.

"My neighbor just woke up one day and started telling people that Berry was the mayor of the bike path. I didn't like that because Orange Cat could also be mayor. There was no election," said McNamara.
